MEMS Investor Journal: How has the recession affected your business? Do you see downward price pressure due to increased competition?
Frank Melzer: Despite the recession, Bosch Sensortec experienced a strong growth of 222% in 2009. The price pressure for consumer application is increasing in 2010, both from established competitors as well as from new entrants.
MEMS Investor Journal: For your MEMS accelerometer products, how are you positioning Bosch Sensortec? What are the key applications that you are currently pursuing? Where do you see the most traction right now?
Frank Melzer: Bosch Sensortec is offering accelerometers for a broad range of applications in the consumer markets. With this approach, we were the fastest growing manufacturer of accelerometers for consumer electronics in 2009 according to Jérémie Bouchaud of iSuppli. The main driver for this growth was the mobile phone market followed by gaming applications and portable computing applications. It is to be expected that the mobile phone accelerometer market is currently the largest market segment and will continue to grow strongly.
MEMS Investor Journal: How do you differentiate your MEMS accelerometer products from competition? What are the key advantages? Who do you see as your main competitors in this space?
Frank Melzer: Accelerometers from Bosch Sensortec utilize the most advanced technologies which allow the smallest package sizes with best performance and reliability. Aside from the smallest package sizes in the market, another key success factor is the low power consumption and most comprehensive portfolio related to performance and measurement range. In addition to this, Bosch Sensortec provides regional onsite field application engineer support and an extensive library of software reference codes.
MEMS Investor Journal: For your MEMS pressure sensor products, what are the key applications that you are currently pursuing? Where do you see the most traction right now?
Frank Melzer: Pressure sensors are increasingly exploited in pedestrian navigation applications especially because this feature is being integrated increasingly into mobile phones. The sensor provides accurate altitude positioning in the range of one meter and thus enables floor detection even if no GPS signal is available. Furthermore, pressure sensors enhance the GNSS accuracy in obstructed reception environment.
MEMS Investor Journal: How do you differentiate your MEMS pressure sensor products from competition? What are the key advantages? Who do you see as your main competitors in this space?
Frank Melzer: Bosch Sensortec pressure sensors provide the best performance versus package size ratio in the market. The advantages are consumer device compatible packages and low power consumption. Similarly to our accelerometers, we also offer an extensive library for reference codes.
