MEMS, or Micro Electro Mechanical Systems, are tiny "smart" devices that combine computer chips with micro-components such as sensors, gears, flow-channels, mirrors and actuators. While the earliest MEMS date back to 1970's, today's MEMS applications are growing at an explosive rate and the MEMS industry is well positioned to quickly emerge into the mainstream. The total market for MEMS has reached $1.7 billion in 2002 and is expected to grow to over $7 billion by 2005. As such, the MEMS industry represents a lucrative area of new growth and investment.
